Does my Pueblo attic need more insulation?

Attic insulation in Pueblo means adding batts, blown-in fill or foam above your ceilings, so the house uses less energy to stay warm in winter and cool in summer. On most houses we seal the gaps in the attic floor first and then insulate, because insulation works a lot better when air isn't blowing through it.

Most calls start with a hot room over the garage, a drafty upstairs or a power bill that went up again, and when I get up there I usually find a few inches of tired, flattened insulation and plenty of gaps around pipes and wires. The price moves with the size of the attic, the material you pick, how much sealing the floor needs and whether the old stuff needs insulation removal first. The schedule turns on the same things, plus any repair that has to happen before we start. We're based in Pueblo and work in Pueblo West, Colorado Springs, Fountain, Fort Carson, Security-Widefield, Stratmoor and plenty of the cities around them, and I look at your attic in person before I put a price on anything.

How we do attic insulation

I start by measuring how many inches are already up there and checking what's under it, because fresh insulation laid over old material that got soaked or turned into a mouse hotel just buries the problem. Then I lay out batts, blown-in and foam side by side for your attic and your budget and tell you which one I'd pick. If your ductwork runs through the attic, I'll usually point you toward foam, and for most other attics sealing the gaps and topping up loose fill gets you more for the money. Before any insulation goes in, our crew does the air sealing, closing the gaps around can lights, pipes, wires and the hatch, so the new insulation isn't fighting a draft. We keep the eave vents clear so the attic can still breathe, and we carry the full depth out to the edges instead of piling it up in the middle. When we're done, we leave you a written record of the depth, the coverage and the bags we used.

Most of the attics we top up get blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose so it reaches the corners and settles around the framing. If the attic is only part of why the house is uncomfortable, I can look at the walls, the crawl space and the rest of your home insulation on the same visit.

What changes an attic insulation job in Pueblo

Pueblo, the county and the Colorado Springs side don't all use the same building office, so before we start we find out which one covers your address. In Pueblo, building permits come from the Southern Colorado Building Department, which you can reach at 719-543-0002. We check whether your job needs a permit instead of guessing, and if it does, we pull it and line up the inspection.

A lot of houses here got insulated once, years ago, and nobody's been up there since, so we usually find thin, packed-down fill and a lot of open gaps along the top plates and around old wiring. We see the same attics on jobs in Pueblo West and Colorado Springs, and we handle them the same way.

Frequently asked questions

How much does attic insulation cost in Pueblo?

The cost comes down to your attic's size, the material you choose and how much sealing and cleanup has to happen before the new insulation goes in, so I won't quote a number before I've been up there. Old insulation that has to come out, or a repair that has to come first, adds to it. Call (719) 601-8052 and I'll come take a look.

Which type of attic insulation is best on a tight budget?

Batts or blankets usually cost the least, and they're the kind a homeowner can put in themselves. Blown-in fill works in almost any attic, and foam costs more but gives more R-value per inch, which is more insulating power in less space, and it seals air too. So a tight budget usually points to batts, and foam makes sense when you want the air sealed in the same step.

What has to be fixed before my attic is insulated?

A Department of Energy attic guide says to hold off while the attic has active knob and tube wiring, vermiculite insulation, bathroom fans venting into it or a leaking roof, and it adds unvented kerosene heaters and gas fireplaces to that list. For vermiculite, the EPA says to assume it may contain asbestos and leave it undisturbed, and if you choose removal, a trained, accredited abatement contractor should do it, separate from whoever assessed it. If I see any of these, I'll tell you plainly and put that repair ahead of the insulation.

How much insulation does an attic in Colorado need?

The county building guide sets R-49 as the ceiling minimum, checked at the insulation inspection on new building work before the drywall goes up. Many in the insulation industry recommend R-60 in Colorado attics if you want to cut energy use further or you live in the state's cold mountain areas. I'll measure how many inches you have now and tell you how far you are from either one.

How long does attic insulation take, and do we have to leave the house?

How long we're up there depends on the size of the attic, how much sealing it needs and whether old insulation comes out first, and I'll lay that out at the estimate. With batts or blown-in you can usually stay home, but spray foam comes with a re-entry time set by the maker, the wait before you, the kids and the pets go back inside, and we'll tell you that before we start.

How do I know if my old blown-in insulation has settled?

If the fill looks flattened, you can see the tops of the ceiling joists or the upstairs runs hotter than it used to, it has probably settled. Loose fill can sink over time and lose some of its R-value, especially when it wasn't packed densely to begin with, which is why depth and density both matter on a blown-in job.

  • Blown-in insulation

A good fit when your attic already has some insulation and just needs topping up to an even depth.

  • Home insulation

For when the cold rooms and high bills come from more than the attic, and you want the whole house looked at.

  • Insulation removal

When the old insulation is soaked, full of droppings or otherwise not worth keeping, it comes out before anything new goes in.
