Request an estimateHow do I add insulation to an older house in Pueblo?
Retrofit insulation is adding insulation to the attic, walls, floors or crawl space of a house that's already built and doesn't have enough, and in Pueblo we usually pair it with sealing the air leaks so the house stays warmer in winter and cooler upstairs in summer.
Most of the calls I get for this start with a drafty back bedroom, a room over the garage that bakes in July, or a power bill that keeps climbing in a house that's had the same few inches up there for decades. The price turns on how much insulation is there now, how easy the attic is to get into, how many gaps we have to close first, which is the air sealing part of the job, and whether the walls need work too. The schedule mostly turns on what we find, because some problems get fixed before anything new goes in. Your own figure comes from the estimate, after I've looked at the space.
How we handle retrofit insulation, in order
We go after the easy wins first, because in most older houses that's where your money does the most. Our crew seals the gaps around can lights, pipes, wires and the attic hatch, since insulation laid over an open hole just has air blowing through it. Then we top up the attic floor with blown-in insulation, loose cellulose or fiberglass blown through a hose, and we carry it all the way to the outer edge of the ceiling while keeping the eave vents clear so the attic keeps breathing. The walls come last, and only if they need it. If you have gas or oil appliances, I'll suggest having them tested before and after we seal, because a tighter house can sometimes pull their exhaust back inside instead of sending it up the flue.
Retrofit work runs into a couple of other jobs. If your ductwork lives in the attic, spray foam insulation can be worth the extra cost, since foam seals the air while it insulates. For most attics, though, sealing the gaps and topping up loose fill gets you there for less, and our attic insulation page covers that job on its own.
Permits and older attics for retrofit insulation in Pueblo
Before we start, we find out which building office covers your address, because Pueblo, the county and the Colorado Springs side don't all use the same one. Inside Pueblo, building permits come from the Southern Colorado Building Department, while Pueblo County handles building matters in the unincorporated parts of the county, so a house in Pueblo West goes through the county instead. We check with that office whether your job needs a permit, and if it does, we pull it and line up the inspection.
What we see on jobs here is mostly older houses with a few tired inches of insulation, an unsealed attic hatch and eave vents that got buried the last time someone topped it up. We run into the same attics on jobs in Colorado Springs, and we fix them the same way, seal first and then fill.
Why call us for retrofit work
I come out and look myself
I come out to look at the job myself, then our install crew does the work, and I'm on site for most of it. You're talking to the person who actually climbed into your attic.
Sealing first since 2017
We've been at this since 2017, and sealing a house before we insulate it is what we're best known for. It's the part nobody sees once we leave, and it's the part that decides whether the room stays warm.
License and insurance before we start
We're licensed and fully insured, and I'll go over it at the estimate so you're not just taking our word for it. Pueblo County requires the right license or registration for most construction work there, and hiring someone without it is against the county's code too.
Straight answers about your attic
We tell you plainly what's up there, including the mouse that overstayed his lease. If a job should wait or happen in a different order, I'll say so rather than seal in a problem you'll pay for later.

Get a retrofit insulation estimate at your house
We reply within one business day to set a time, and I come out to look at the attic, walls and crawl space before I put a price on anything. The estimate is free and done at your home, with no obligation and no pressure to book. If you can, tell us how you get into the attic, whether you have gas or oil appliances, and whether you've seen damp insulation or loose, pebbly fill that might be vermiculite.

Frequently asked questions
How much does retrofit insulation cost in Pueblo?
Insulation work in Pueblo usually costs about $1 to $5 per square foot, and that's the going rate for the area, not a quote from us. Where your house lands depends on what goes in, where it goes and how much sealing or cleanup has to happen first. We give you your own number after I've looked at the space.
Do I need to seal air leaks before adding insulation?
Yes, because money spent on insulation can be wasted if the holes and gaps in the ceilings, walls and foundation aren't sealed first. Insulation slows heat, but it doesn't stop moving air, so a gap around a pipe keeps leaking right through the new layer. If a contractor skips straight to blowing insulation, ask what they're doing about the gaps.
How do I insulate the walls of an older house without tearing them open?
Insulation can be dense-packed, packed in tight, into the wall cavities through small holes cut from the outside or the inside, so the walls stay where they are. It's the least disruptive way to insulate a closed wall. The holes get plugged and patched afterward, and we'll talk through which side makes sense on your house at the estimate.
What should I do about vermiculite insulation in my attic?
Leave it alone, because the EPA advises assuming vermiculite may contain asbestos and keeping it undisturbed. If you decide to have it removed, the EPA says a trained and accredited asbestos abatement contractor should do it, and not the same company that assessed it. If we find it, we stop and tell you before anyone touches it.
What needs fixing in the attic before new insulation goes in?
Wet insulation from a leaky roof, moldy or rotted rafters or joists, and an attic with little or no ventilation all come first, and ENERGY STAR recommends a professional correct them. Knob and tube wiring is on that list too, since it can be a fire hazard in contact with insulation, along with kitchen, bath or dryer vents that blow moist air into the attic instead of outdoors. None of it is a reason to panic, just a reason to do the job in the right order.
How long does retrofit insulation take?
It mostly depends on how much of the house we're doing, so an attic top-up is usually the shorter job and walls take longer. Anything that has to be fixed before we insulate, like a roof leak or old wiring, gets done ahead of us and moves the start. Once I've seen the space, I can tell you what has to happen first.
Other work that often goes with it
Spray foam insulation
When ducts or an awkward space need sealing and insulating in one pass, foam does both, at a higher price.
Attic insulation
If the attic is the only thing running thin, this is the place to start, and often the only job you need.
